E-Learning and E-Assessment

To support our teaching and test our own system design concepts, we began developing the JACK automatic exercise and examination system in 2006. The e-assessment system, originally designed for use in programming education only, has been continuously extended in several projects since then. In the meantime, it offers many different task types for use in computer science, mathematics, natural sciences, linguistics and other areas. Supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), among others, JACK is also known and used beyond the borders of the University of Duisburg-Essen. A modular, web-based architecture guarantees flexibility for future extensions to new areas of application and, at the same time, the performance of the system even in high-load situations such as exams with several hundred participants.

The focus of our research in the area of e-assessment is on the competence-oriented generation of feedback for solutions to complex tasks and open design tasks as well as on the parameterized and adaptive automatic generation of task variants. For this purpose, the JACK system offers the possibility to create multi-level tasks in which different task types can be linked with each other. By integrating specialized system components such as the computer algebra system SAGE, a SPARQL client, and an NLG framework, subject-specific task content can also be generated while maintaining complex constraints.

In further research activities, we also consider organizational and didactic aspects of e-assessments in order to optimally integrate the use of e-assessment systems into the teaching process. In doing so, we emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration with subject didacticians from many different domains.
