The project is a multifaceted initiative that aims to improve the landscape of research software engineering. This involves conducting in-depth interviews with stakeholders to gain an understanding of their priorities and challenges. Based on these insights, the project will develop frameworks outlining the drivers of various stakeholders in the research software ecosystem.

One work package will explore the factors that contribute to the sustainability of research software development in different scientific areas, examining lifecycle models, operations and maintenance methods which differ significantly from those used for business or consumer software. The project will host workshops to discuss and refine life cycle strategies and non-profit models for supporting research software projects.

Additionally, one work package is dedicated to developing a comprehensive educational curriculum that addresses the evolving needs of scientists and researchers in mastering foundational and advanced software development skills, as well as business model development. This curriculum is informed by the work conducted in other work packages. The project will design learning modules about research software development in a community context and establish platforms for the professional development and ongoing learning of research software engineers.

Effective dissemination of findings to various communities, including those involved in research software, software engineering and learning technologies, will be performed throughout the project. Regional public events will be organized to raise awareness of research software engineering and to facilitate interaction between the different communities. The project also aims to extend its outreach by expanding to the school level, with a focus on workshops and interdisciplinary courses to engage teachers and students in research software engineering and its connections with various objects of their school subjects.
